The Trump phenomenon's most telling and defining instances – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. In the course of a few weeks, the American president began displaying the public his intentions for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions of the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing portion to build it.
He has committed acts countless times more severe – the existing assessment of fatalities due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and growing, and recently an analysis projected his petroleum strategies would kill 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have dared – genuinely, no previous leader would have conceived – independently wrecking major areas of the White House to build a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.
We moved from 'the humble will receive the planet' toward 'the meek shall die to cholera'
As confusing as it is to observe the chief executive attempt to overturn the old idea about democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there is one large group among Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations almost a majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched across decades as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of love into a figure of hostility who endorses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in scripture; this has happened more slowly, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my childhood, as conceptually Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and since the rapidly expanding group of Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves non-believers or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with different religions; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of great price within Christian narrative.
It is emphatically definitely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch appearing; rather, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to escape covert authorities. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his message concerns compassion for fellow humans, particularly for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and protecting. Jesus' answer to hostility is to offer the other cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a method to instruct the assailant; his crime policy is that if someone steals your coat you must offer him your sweater too.
The apparent and clear fact that Christ in biblical accounts advocates for a type of extreme compassion centered on the poor has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a scandalous religion: appealing to the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality demanding to be controlled. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Best of Us
Hence I have become encouraged to witness the determined opposition to Trump arise in this past year. It has provided substantial consolation to help build the campaign that has protested openly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired electorate to participate in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners during all protests and appeals to the highest qualities in US history.

The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by relationship to the highest within national tradition, just as Christianity is most protected by relationship to elements that cause it to be distinctive and magnificent, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it suggest feigning the most negative about the nation and religious tradition was nonexistent; it means both meekness and belief, a combination that committed national faithful should embrace.
